The family tree is five meters long
76 members of the Family Association Harm and Hille Oldebusch have met in Stenum.
This Saturday at “Lüschens Bauerndiele” books, letters, and any number of stories have provided discussion material for the relatives. Some members of the Family Meeting traveled to STENUM from Holland, from France, and from the USA. For some, Family Meetings are boring and they will try anything to avoid them. Others on the other side are waiting already for the whole year, such as Jens Ohlenbusch. He met this weekend in Stenum with 75 members of the association Harm and Hille Oldebusch and was elated. “It is simply great to know, that one has such a large family. It is a good feeling.” Ohlenbusch traveled from the town of Mainz to meet his relatives aged 3 to 85 years, in the restaurant “Lüschens Bauerndiele”. Many guests however had a much longer journey. He reported: “seven members came from France, six from Holland, and six from the United States”. But the greatest number of relatives came from the northern part of Germany, except for a couple from Stuttgart. Ernst Ohlebusch from Bookholzberg helped in the organization of the meeting. He is familiar with the family history and explained: “Our first ancestors lived on the ancestral farm on the “Stenumer Strasse” in Bookholzberg. Their names were Harm and Hille Oldebusch. AS member Jens Ohlenbusch clarified: “During the passage of time the names Ohlenbusch and Ohlebusch developed from the name Oldebusch. The family tree can be traced back to 1637. Thanks to our family genealogist Hartwig Ohlenbusch from Neuenburg we are constantly researching new family branches.” “He is intensely busy with genealogy and was now voted to be the president of our association” added Ernst. Hartwig Ohlenbusch has brought his research results to this meeting in Stenum, which is already the third of its kind. The paper which depicts the family tree is already 5.2 meters long. The family tree gave a good reason for discussions among the relatives, as well as the four books that present the history of the family. “They contain anecdotes, as for example the double wedding”, said Ernst Ohlebusch. During the Saturday visit of the ancestral farm, which is now owned and operated by Gerd Hanken, and during the World Cup soccer matches, the members had ample time to exchange ideas. On Sunday the association made an excursion. Ernst Ohlebusch reported: “We traveled over Vegesack to Worpswede. There we had a horse-drawn wagon ride and visited museums. Everybody had a great time.” The next family meeting will be in five years.
Ohlebusch said: “Until then there will be a family letter twice a year for everybody.”
Lined up in a row, the family members show clearly, that they are a large family. Even relatives from abroad traveled to the meeting in Stenum.

"Ohlebüsche" to trace their ancestors
Gerd Hanken receives the"extended family" on his farm - letters inform members.
70 family members from four states came for the 4th Family Reunion of the "Ohlebüsche".
Long family tree: In front of the memorial stone (center) on the farm Hanken, the visiting family members line up for a souvenir photo. Gerd Hanken briefed them on the recent developments of the farm, of which 96 hectares are currently farmed.
Bookholzberg - "This might be a record." - A bit of pride was apparent on Saturday in Bookholzberg, when Ernst Ohlebusch pointed to a paper with considerable proportions. "5.20 meters long" is the Family Tree that was unfurled on Hanken's courtyard at the Stenumer road. The occasion for the presentation: the fourth meeting of the Family "Ohlebüsche" to which 70 family members from Germany, the U.S., the Netherlands and France had traveled.
Meeting every five years
Every five years the "extended family" has a family reunion. As one listens carefully it becomes clear that the names of the participants have definite differences: Some are called Ohlenbusch, some Ohlebusch and Olenbush, Oldenbush or Ohldebusch. However, there is one thing in common: The participants of the meeting are descendants of Harm and Hille Oldebusch, who had married in 1630 and had lived on the farm that belongs to Hanken today.
It is likely, however, that the history of the family and their farm is considerably older. It is possible that the single-unit farmstead was established in 800-1200, ie. that it is about as old as the nearby “Esch” villages, so said Dr. Heiko Ohlenbusch (Strasbourg) and Hartwig Ohlenbusch (Neuenburg). But we may be able to prove that only by means of excavations.
In 1996, the Family Association was formed. This weekend gathering was the fourth meeting. Besides joint excursions, as for example trips to Vegesack and Worpswede, "Ohlebüsche" once again visited the farmstead on the Stenumer road. Owner Gerd Hanken, whose family purchased the property in the 1950s, received them.
He was proud to manage a farm with such a tradition, Hanken assured his guests. In 2006, his family had donated a memorial stone. A bronze plaque on the boulder informs about the history of the family and the farm.
New President
The Ohlebüsche are organized in an association, and the members are informed twice a year in a family news letter. At the top is a "president". In the past ten years, this was Dr. Heiko Ohlenbusch. This weekend the family historian Hartwig Ohlenbusch was elected as his successor. -

Family Association Oldebusch Unveils Memorial Plaque

Bookholzberg (FH) Occationed by the 10 year existence of the family association ’Harm and Hille Oldebusch’ this Saturday 50 descendents unveiled a memorial plaque at their ancestral farm, today the farm of family Hanken. The plaque cost 600 Euro and was financed by membership fees and donations. The granite boulder that now carries the plaque was already present at the farm. Documents allow the tracing of the Ohlebusch name back to the year 1575, at that time as Oldebusch. Today descendent live in France, the Netherlands, and the USA. Shortly before the end of the war the farm was destroyed but rebuilt in the year 1953. The following year it became property of the family Hanken. -

Family Tradition Retained on Granite
Family Meeting Memorial Plaque Unveiled on the Farm “Ohlebusch” – Association exists for 10 Years
A bronze plaque on the stone informed about the family history. Today, the farm is owned by the family Hanken.
Members of the Oldebusch Clan meet on Saturday around the Memorial Stone, which was unveiled by the youngest Members of the Family-Amelie, Mattes, and Anton (on the stone). Guest was also the President of the Town- and Homeland Association, Ernst Schröder (right).
A Bronze Tablet on the stone informs about the family history. Today the farm is owned by Family Hanken.
BOOKHOLZBERG – It is not necessarily easier if all attendants of a meeting carry the same name. “Ohl-enbusch, with ‘n’ “ say these, “Ohl-ebusch, without the ‘n’ ” emphasize others, while Oldebusch, Ohldebusch and Oldenbusch were rather in the minority during the large family meeting of the Family Association Harm and Hille Oldebusch on Saturday afternoon in Bookholzberg. Cause was the solemn unveiling of a memorial stone on the ancestral farm “Ohlebusch” at the Stenumer Street.
A large bronze plaque on the granite foundling explains to visitors the history of the clan and of the farm, which, it can be shown, dates back to the 16th century, but is likely to be 1000 years old. Today, however, the farm Ohlebusch is not operated by a descendant of the clan – the owner is Gerd Hanken, whose family bought the farm in the 1950s. The vice-president of the Family Association, Frank Ohlenbusch from the Netherlands, specifically thanked the family Hanken that “the future existence of the farm is assured”. Also the present owners provided the memorial stone next to the entrance to the farm. In the meantime it is almost exactly to the day 10 years that the family association “Oldebusch” organized. Genealogic research from several sides brought individual family members together and inspired them to associate. Of the mostly in Germany and the Netherlands, but also in France and the USA, living members of the clan, about 40 men, women, and children came to Bookholzberg for the activities. After the unveiling of the memorial stone and the accompaniment of a short chronology by the family historian Hartwig Ohlenbusch (Neuenburg /Friesia), the Ohlen-, Ohle-,Olde-, and Oldenbuschs sat down in the ‘Schwarzen Ross” (Restaurant ‘black Horse’) for afternoon coffee before the family again scattered in all directions. -

Family Association Ohlebusch unveils Plaque
If on this Saturday afternoon someone would have called the name “Mr. or Mrs. Ohlenbusch or similar” on the farm Hanken on the Stenumer Street in Ganderkesee, he would have been presumably surprised, because more that 30 heads would have turned to him or her. The explanation of this phenomenon is simple. Here the ”family association Harm and Hille Oldebusch” was meeting to unveil a memorial plaque to the ancestors of all the Ohlenbusch, Ohlebusch, Oldenbusch, and Oldebusch in the whole world.
All persons in Germany, France, Holland, and USA that carry this name belong to the clan. Hartwig Ohlenbusch, member and genealogical researcher of the association, is convinced of this. Before the present members were allowed to look at the long awaited plaque, Hartwig Ohlenbusch presented to them the history of the family. The name was first mentioned in 1575. At that time a Johann Struven compiled a register that listed the properties and income of the Delmenhorster Bishopric. Listed there was “Erve tom Oldenbusche”. The clan owes its name to the region where the farm Hanken is located. According to legend the Hasbruch and the Stenum woods used to be one connected forest. This continuous forest had several places such as this one where the trees were bushes. In 1578 a register lists the name “Tapke ton Oldenbusch”.
The youngest of the many headed Ohlenbusch clan, Mattis, Amelie, and Anton , unveil the Memorial Plaque for the Family Progenitors Harm and Hille.
His descendant Cord takes the name of the farm as his surname. The preposition is dropped and the name Oldenbusch changes to Oldebusch. Hartwig enlightens: “that is the way our clan elders Harm and Hille Oldebusch with their residence name Oldenbusch are listed in the church registers”. In the course of centuries the name of the farm as listed in the church registers has slightly changed: Oldebusch, Ohlenbusch, and since 1851 Ohlebusch.
Saturday numerous members of the family from Holland and Germany unveiled the bronze honor plaque. It found its resting place on a granite boulder at the farm Hanken, which had been owned by the family Ohlebusch until 1954. At the same time the clan, which maintains its closeness via regular Family Letters, celebrated the tenth birthday of its family association. -
